Mike earned top honors for Sports Story of the Year at the National Scholastic Press Association's convention in November. The Scholastic Press Association is part of the Journalism Education Association.

Mike's article, entitled "East vs West: Is This A Fair Fight" compared the two divisions, East and West, of the Mid Suburban League, and the disparities between the two. His article was published in the Prospector, the school's newspaper. The newspaper also earned recognition at the competition taking second place in the Best of Show. Mr. Jason Block, the school's newspaper adviser said that winning the honor is like winning a Pulitzer Prize for a high school student.
